squeaky clean and shiny (part one)

over the next few posts you will be hearing a lot about this, but charlie, maddy and i are in hobart with our friend gus. we arrived earlier today, but to be honest we’re all already pretty worn out. getting here was wild- we had the 8 hour drive to melbourne, a few days of hectic socialising, followed by the 11 hour boat trip across the tasman. we’re here now, and everyone feels a little fragile and a lot grimy.

whether i’m at home or travelling,  one of the best things i can do to feel less like a ball of slime and more like a person is get deep into my skincare routine. it feels healing both physically and emotionally, and because travel is full of such crazy ups and downs, this is a time where skincare is both incredibly helpful and easily neglected. so over my next few posts i want to tell you about my morning and evening skincare routines, as well as giving you some skincare tips specifically related to travel.

MORNING: (exfoliate, cleanse, tone, moisturise, highlight)

the first thing i like to do in the morning is of course wash my face. i usually do this in the shower for time saving purposes and for less water splashing around purposes.

about twice weekly, i exfoliate before i cleanse in order to get rid of any dead skin. if you’re doing a lot of hiking, or confined on a ship with yelling children for hours (me) you may want to do this more often, just as needed. currently i have been using the Benefit Refined Finish Facial Polish. this product is gently scented and nicely creamy. i have quite dry skin and a gentle exfoliator is all I need to feel clean but not raw.

once i’ve exfoliated, i follow this up with my daily cleanser. i use the La Roche Posay Lipikar Replenishing Cleansing Oil religiously. it’s marketed as a body cleanser for extremely dry, sensitive skin but i love using it on my face. like other cleansing oils, it goes on like an oil and then foams up soo nicely. it feels so luxurious but it’s really about as gentle as a cleanser can be- it’s even suitable for babies!

after cleansing, i’ll hop out of the shower and after drying my face, immediately apply some toner. i love Kiehls so much, and their Ultra Facial Toner is so hydrating (great for winter) and really evens out my complexion.

i like to let my toner sink in for a minute, so this is when i might put on my deodorant and perfume (s/o to Diptyque Philoskyos for making me smell like a fig). after this is my favourite step- moisturising. the La Roche Posay Toleriane Soothing Protective Cream is seriously so lovely. it’s light and buildable, so one layer is great for summer but you can put it on a little thicker in winter when your skin really needs it.

my final step is not skincare, it’s just something i love because it makes me feel shiny and also awake. i read a cosmo article (praise) where it talked about kim kardashian using the RMS Living Luminiser. that lady GLOWS so of course i had to buy some too. it’s a little speno, so really any highlighter would do, but i love that it’s all natural and also that it brings me that much closer to kim k. i apply this on my cheekbones, my cupid’s bow and on the inside corners of my eyes. it’s very subtle, but every now and then it catches in the light and it feels and looks lovely.

that’s my morning routine! it might seem long and crazy because i ramble, but it takes no time at all and is so refreshing. taking care of your skin is a really great practice for self care because it’s less about how you look and more about how you feel. so go ahead and love your pink, shiny squeaky clean selves, and i’ll be back soon with the night time version of this.

with love
